WordPress : FAQ

What is WordPress and what is it used for?

WordPress is what is known as a CMS (Content Management System). In other words, it is software for creating and managing a website.

It's a very handy tool for creating a website without needing to know how to code. Whether you want to launch a blog, a showcase website, a portfolio, or even an online store, it's one of the best choices you can make. It's easy to use, extremely flexible, and, above all, widely used around the world.

What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

WordPress.org is the version you install on your own hosting. You have complete freedom: you choose your plugins, your themes, and you can modify whatever you want. This is what you should use if you want a professional website.

WordPress.com, on the other hand, is a turnkey platform where everything is already hosted. But it's very limited, especially in the free version.

Why should you avoid WordPress.com (especially the free version)?

Overall, I don't recommend WordPress.com because it's very limited compared to a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

And the big problem with the free version of WordPress.com is that you are restricted in every way: you can't install your own plugins, you don't get a professional domain name (you get a domain name like yourwebsite.wordpress.com), there is little customization, and on top of that, they display ads on your site.

You don't really own your site, and you won't be able to develop it freely. Frankly, you might as well go straight to WordPress.org.

Which web host should you choose for a WordPress site?

For a WordPress site, I recommend choosing a reliable, fast host with 1-click installation. It should also offer automatic backups, an SSL certificate, and good technical support.

Some good web hosts include WP Engine, which specializes in WordPress, Kinsta, and Bluehost.

In Europe, Hostinger is a safe bet. Alternatively, o2switch, PlanetHoster, and Infomaniak also do a good job.

What are the costs for a WordPress site (hosting, theme, plugins, etc.)?

With WordPress.org, the software is free, but you will need to pay for hosting (around $5 to $10/month for a quality host), a domain name (around $10/year), and possibly a premium theme (between $30 and $80 if you choose a paid one), and sometimes a few paid plugins if you need specific features. You can also hire a freelancer to help you with certain aspects if necessary.

What is an open-source CMS?

An open-source CMS (such as WordPress) is free software that you can download, install, and modify as you see fit. It is developed and improved by a community, which allows for great flexibility. You are free to use it for any type of project without having to pay for a license.

And unlike a proprietary (closed) CMS such as Shopify or Wix, for example, with an open-source CMS you can modify the code and even create your own themes and plugins.

Why choose WordPress to create a website?

WordPress is simple, powerful, and extremely flexible. You can customize almost everything, add thousands of features with plugins, and manage your site even if you're not a developer. It's also a reassuring choice: it's the most widely used CMS in the world, so there are tons of resources, tutorials, and service providers available.

What types of sites can you create with WordPress (blog, store, showcase, marketplace, etc.)?

Some CMSs specialize in a certain type of site (Shopify specializes in e-commerce sites, for example). But WordPress can be used to create all types of sites, even though it was originally designed for creating and managing blogs.

Today, you can create almost anything with WordPress: a blog, a showcase site, an online store, a portfolio, a marketplace, a booking site, an online training course, etc. With the right plugins and a little customization, the possibilities are truly endless.

Can you create an online store with WordPress?

Yes, it's entirely possible thanks to the WooCommerce plugin, which transforms WordPress into a real online store. You can sell physical or digital products, manage payments, deliveries, inventory, promotions, and more, all directly from your site.

Can you create a marketplace with WordPress?

Yes, it is possible, although it is a little more technical than a traditional website. There are plugins such as Dokan, WC Vendors, and WCFM Marketplace that allow you to create a platform with multiple sellers. This is a good solution if you want to launch a project such as BeFreelancr or another multi-seller platform while keeping your budget reasonable.

Why is WordPress the most widely used CMS in the world?

It's simple: WordPress is free, customizable, easy to learn, and powerful enough to handle very comprehensive websites. There are thousands of plugins to add features, themes to change the design, and a huge community to find help.

Whether you're a beginner or a pro, it's a solution that can be adapted to almost any project. That's what makes WordPress so successful.

Do you need to know how to code to use WordPress?

Not necessarily. You can create a website without coding, using themes and plugins. But if you really want to go far, avoid problems, or have a custom-made website, it's better to hire a WordPress developer (on this page, for example). This will save you time and give you a truly professional website.

Can you create a member area on a WordPress site?

Yes, it's entirely possible. There are several plugins for this, such as MemberPress, Ultimate Member, and Restrict Content Pro. You can manage registrations, logins, user profiles, and even create content reserved for certain members.

How do I integrate a booking or appointment system into WordPress?

Just install a suitable plugin. Tools such as Bookly, Amelia, or WP Simple Booking Calendar make it easy to add a booking or appointment scheduling system to your site. You can customize slots, confirmations, payments, and reminders according to your needs.

Can WordPress be connected to a CRM?

Yes, you can connect your WordPress site to most CRMs on the market. There are plugins or native integrations for tools such as HubSpot, Mailchimp, Zoho, Sendinblue, and ActiveCampaign. You can also use tools such as Zapier or Make to automate connections between WordPress and your CRM.

Is it possible to create a multilingual WordPress site?

It is possible and quite common to create a WordPress site in several languages. There are plugins such as WPML, Polylang, and TranslatePress that allow you to manage multiple languages on the same site. You can translate your pages, articles, menus, widgets, and even your product listings if you have a store. This is ideal if you are targeting an international audience.

There are also plugins such as Weglot that allow you to translate your site automatically.

Where can you find a freelance WordPress expert (developer, integrator, web designer, SEO specialist, etc.)?

The easiest way is to use a specialized platform such as BeFreelancr. On this page, you will find WordPress freelancers for all your needs: development, integration, design, SEO optimization, maintenance, etc.

You choose the service that suits you and work securely, without having to request quotes or spend hours searching.

On BeFreelancr, you can find everything you need to create or improve a WordPress site. There are WordPress developers for custom code, web designers to customize your theme, freelancers to install a plugin, fix a bug, create a WooCommerce store, optimize your SEO, secure your site, or even set up a member area.

You purchase the service that suits your needs directly, with no quotes and no hassle.

What is the difference between WordPress and other CMSs such as Wix or Shopify?

WordPress is open-source, so you have complete freedom. You can install it wherever you want, add all the features you want, and most importantly, you own your site.

Wix is easier to get started with, but very limited when you want to do something customized.

Shopify is very good for e-commerce, but you are dependent on their ecosystem, and it can quickly become expensive. With WordPress, you have more flexibility and control in the long term.

What are the alternatives to WordPress?

There are several alternatives depending on your needs. For a simple website: Wix, Webflow, or Squarespace. For a store: Shopify, PrestaShop, or Magento. And if you're looking for a more technical CMS: Drupal or Joomla. But honestly, in most cases, WordPress remains the most flexible, widely used, and easiest to upgrade solution.
