For insight sake, here is my take on what I consider to be a translation worthy of respect : Quality and professional translations are achieved by avoiding literal translation in a strategic way; carrying out some research; carefully translating idioms and expressions; respecting the punctuation rules of the target language and tolerating no fault but also ensuring terminological consistency for long or technical documents.
That is the process I used in the past through translations of paramedical and literary theses.
